Ercan Airport Transfers: Getting to Famagusta, Kyrenia and Nicosia

Facts checked · 5 min read

Short answer

Allow 40–50 minutes by car for the roughly 50 km from Ercan Airport to Famagusta, about 40 minutes to Kyrenia and some 20 to North Nicosia. Your options are the KIBHAS shuttle, timed roughly to flights, a taxi from the arrivals hall (agree the fare first), a pre-booked transfer or a rental car.

There is a particular moment on the descent into Ercan when the plain opens out below you and the Kyrenia mountains rise in the distance. Minutes later you are on the ground, and the first practical question of the trip arrives: how do I get from here to my bed? This guide answers it calmly, comparing the four ways out of the airport, how long each journey takes, and how to make a late arrival feel like the start of a holiday rather than the end of a long day.

Ercan at a glance

North Cyprus’s airport, Ercan (code ECN), lies some 20 minutes from North Nicosia; its new terminal opened in 2023. Every flight comes through Türkiye: you either fly direct from a Turkish airport or change planes at one. If you are travelling from the UK or elsewhere in Europe, that usually means a change in Istanbul or another Turkish city.

One detail matters before you book. In the Republic of Cyprus’s view, Ercan is not a legal port of entry. If your trip stays in the north, this changes nothing; if you hope to visit the south as well, flying into Larnaca is the safer route. Our guide to crossing between north and south and our page on North Cyprus entry requirements explain why.

Step by step through arrivals

The arrival process is short and familiar, but knowing the order helps:

  1. Passport control. Show your passport or ID. If you would rather not have your passport stamped, ask for the separate entry slip and keep it until you leave.
  2. Baggage. While you wait for your bags, switch your phone on and check your plan; it is a good moment to set up an eSIM.
  3. Customs, then out into the arrivals hall, where the shuttle desk, the taxi rank and transfer drivers are waiting.

Your four options

The KIBHAS shuttle

From Ercan, KIBHAS shuttle buses head for Kyrenia, Nicosia, Güzelyurt and Famagusta. Departures are roughly matched to flight arrivals, and you buy your ticket at the bus or its desk. It is the most economical way out, and a sensible choice for a solo traveller with light luggage and no particular hurry.

Keep in mind:

  • KIBHAS revises its fares and timetable from time to time; look them up before your flight.
  • Drop-offs are in the town centres, so the final leg to your hotel may mean a short taxi.
  • If you land very late, confirm in advance that a departure fits your flight.

A taxi from arrivals

Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall, and they are the most direct option, particularly with heavy bags or after midnight. The one rule worth remembering: agree the fare before you get in. Prices move with the lira, so we do not quote one here. Ask, too, whether the driver takes cards, because some taxis are cash-only; carrying a few lira from the start saves an awkward moment. Our page on North Cyprus currency and money covers exchange and cards.

A pre-booked transfer

If you like a holiday to begin with someone holding a sign with your name on it, book a transfer. The price is fixed in advance, nobody needs to negotiate at midnight, and for a family or a group the cost per person can compare well with a taxi. It is worth asking where you are staying whether they can arrange one.

A rental car

If you plan to explore on your own terms, collecting a car at the airport makes sense; confirm the pick-up point with the rental company when you book. Remember that traffic drives on the left and that rental cars carry red plates. After a long flight, take the first drive slowly. Licences, age limits and speed limits are in our guide to driving in North Cyprus.

Choosing between them

Three questions usually settle it:

  1. When do you land? Late arrivals are easiest with a transfer or a taxi.
  2. How many of you are there, and how much luggage? A solo, light traveller can happily take the shuttle; a group is better off with a transfer.
  3. How will you spend the rest of the stay? If Salamis, the beaches and Kyrenia are on your list, a car collected at the airport pays for itself in freedom.

Going home

At the end of the stay, book your taxi or transfer to the airport the day before, so the last morning is unhurried. If you are dropping a rental car at Ercan, confirm the return point and time in advance, and keep your entry slip with your passport for departure.

The Larnaca alternative

If you would rather fly without a Turkish connection, or plan to explore the south as well as the north, land at Larnaca and travel north by road. The drive to Famagusta takes roughly an hour, usually through the Deryneia crossing or via Pergamos and Strovilia. Taxis and transfer firms run the route, but no bus crosses the line.

After you land

Keep the arrival day light. Settle in, shower, and let the evening come to you. Check your phone plan, too: North Cyprus is outside EU roaming rules, and a local SIM or an eSIM avoids an unpleasant bill. If you have arrived in Famagusta, LÉAA LOUNGE is a lounge where food, cocktails, coffee and wine make an easy first evening; take a look at the menu.

For the next morning, our page on things to do in Famagusta is a good place to start, and the North Cyprus travel guide puts the whole island in context.
